Ch. 75 - In Service of Coffee

A couple of hours later, the apartment was quiet and sunlit, the city beyond blanketed in crisp winter chill. Ariel lay sprawled in the big armchair, scrolling idly through her phone and sipping tea, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Holly and the warmth of their morning.

A playful idea started to take root. Why not visit the café? And not just as herself, but as the best version of herself; The Ariel that made Holly blush behind the counter and stammer in front of customers.

She set down her mug and went to her closet, sorting through her clothes with a grin. The goal: warm enough for the walk, cute enough to turn Holly’s head. After a moment’s consideration, she chose a soft, high-waisted plaid skirt. One that hugged her curves and flared just enough to swish with every step. She paired it with a thick, pale pink sweater that felt like a hug, and a pair of black leggings underneath for insulation. She found her favorite pastel scarf, wrapped it snug around her neck, and pulled on a matching beanie.

For boots, she chose a pair that added a little extra bounce to her step, just for the fun of it. She fluffed her hair, added a dab of blush and lip gloss, then spun in front of the mirror, checking her profile. Her belly was unmistakably round and plush under the sweater, and her hips filled the skirt with an unapologetic softness.

“Not bad, McIntyre,” she said, giving her reflection a wink and a sassy little pose. She even practiced a few steps of her signature waddle, grinning as she imagined Holly’s reaction.

Before leaving, she slipped her Junimo keychain onto her bag and headed for the door. The air outside was biting, but Ariel felt invincible as she made her way down the block, her scarf trailing and her cheeks flush in the winter sun. As she walked, she imagined the look on Holly’s face, and the anticipation only made her step lighter.

The little bell over the café door jingled as Ariel stepped inside, glowing with mischief. Java Junction was a gentle bustle of late-morning regulars and soft indie music. At the counter, Lila was frothing milk, Marissa stood nearby in a pastel coat chatting, and Holly was bent over the pastry case, restocking cinnamon rolls.

All three looked up at the sound of the bell, and for a split second, conversation paused.

Ariel beamed, eyes bright, her skirt swishing as she stepped confidently toward the counter. She made sure to toss her scarf over her shoulder just so.

Marissa was first to react, her face lighting up in surprise and delight. “Ariel! Oh my gosh, you look adorable!” she called, grinning from ear to ear.

Lila blushed, tucking a strand of pastel pink hair behind her ear, her Greek accent soft. “That scarf is so cute, Ariel! You look… um, so warm.”

But it was Holly whose reaction made the whole trip worth it. She straightened, eyes widening, lips parting in an unabashedly awestruck smile. “Well, if it isn’t the most beautiful girl in Seattle,” Holly said, her Texan drawl thick as honey. She leaned over the counter, elbows on the polished surface, chin in her hands, drinking Ariel in.

Ariel tossed her hair and struck a playful pose, one hip cocked, grinning. “Just thought I’d brighten up the place a bit.”

Holly’s eyes sparkled as she pretended to scan the room. “Well, it’s working. Place feels at least ten degrees warmer all of a sudden. Lila, you feel that?”

Lila nodded, giggling shyly. “Y-yes, definitely!”

Marissa added, “You bring all the sunshine, Ariel. And you smell like the best bakery in town.”

Ariel waggled her eyebrows. “That’s just my secret plan to get free pastries.”

“Oh, is that right?” Holly grinned, coming out from behind the counter and meeting Ariel halfway. “Well, let’s see what I can do for a girl who looks that cute. What’s your pleasure, gorgeous?”

Ariel gave her a mock-thoughtful look, finger tapping her chin. “Hmm… I think I’ll start with one cinnamon roll and about a dozen compliments, please.”

Lila giggled again, her nervousness fading. Marissa watched the two of them with a warm, knowing smile, nudging Lila gently. “See? That’s relationship goals right there.”

Holly leaned in, her voice dropping to a playful whisper. “You know I’ll give you all the cinnamon rolls you want, but the compliments might take all day.”

Ariel leaned in, their faces inches apart. “Good. I’ve got nowhere to be.”

Marissa piped up, “If you two start making out in front of the register, are we going to have to pay for the VIP experience?”

Lila chuckled, trying not to spit the drink she just took. “Marissa!”

Ariel and Holly both burst out laughing, the sound filling the café with a happiness that seemed to make even the regulars smile. Holly slipped an arm around Ariel’s waist, giving her a quick squeeze.

“Let’s get you something warm, Red,” Holly said. “And then maybe… you can help me taste test some new cookies?”

Ariel winked. “Deal. But only if you sit with me.”

Holly grinned, grabbing a cinnamon roll from the case and pouring Ariel a steaming mug of chai. As they settled into their favorite booth, Holly’s arm slung around Ariel’s shoulder, the world felt full of possibility and joy.

For a moment, the cold outside didn’t matter at all. Here, there was only warmth, sweetness, and the promise of another perfect day together.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Ariel took a careful bite of her cinnamon roll, warmth blooming in her chest as Holly nuzzled her cheek. “So,” Holly said quietly, “what brings you by, really? Couldn’t get enough of me this morning?”

Ariel grinned, a playful glint in her eyes. “Something like that. Also, I needed to verify that the cinnamon rolls are still up to standard.”

Holly chuckled. “You’ll have to file an official report.”

Ariel played along, sitting up a bit straighter. “Of course. First note: frosting application is excellent. Cinnamon swirl density… optimal.” She pretended to inspect the roll, biting her lip in mock seriousness.

Holly pulled Ariel in tight, her eyes soft and amused. “You know, you could have texted. I’d have delivered one right to your bed.”

Ariel looked up at her with a smile that was full of genuine warmth. “I just wanted to see you. I like watching you work. You look cute with your hair all messy and your sleeves rolled up.”

Holly rolled her eyes, but her cheeks colored. “Careful. You keep talking like that, and I’ll start accidentally burning the croissants.”

Ariel reached out and let her fingers brush Holly’s hand, just for a moment. “Maybe I want to distract you.”

Holly squeezed Ariel’s fingers before pulling away to refill a coffee mug for a regular, then returned a moment later, lowering her voice. “You always do. Doesn’t even matter what you’re wearing. Though that skirt is… catastrophic.”

Ariel smirked, her voice barely above a whisper. “You should see what I almost wore.”

Holly shot her a look that was a blend of warning and delight. “You’re going to get me in trouble, Red.”

Ariel shrugged, taking another bite of her cinnamon roll, then looking up with mischievous eyes. “You are trouble, Vi.”

Holly grinned and tucked a strand of hair behind Ariel’s ear. “You’re lucky I like you.”

A customer approached, and Holly moved away, calling back over her shoulder, “Don’t go anywhere, okay? I want you to taste the new cookies when I get my break.”

Ariel nodded, cheeks still warm. Watching Holly work was like her favorite show playing just for her.

At the same time, Lila’s break ended and she reluctantly slid out of the booth. Marissa followed with her bag in hand. Lila gave Marissa’s waist a gentle squeeze, her fingers curling into a soft side roll, and pressed a sweet kiss to her lips. Marissa’s cheeks flushed, and she gripped Marissa’s hand in return, beaming.

Marissa nuzzled her forehead against Lila’s, giggling softly. “Have a good shift, Lil. Text me if you get bored, okay?”

Lila nodded, eyes shining. “Have fun at work. Don’t buy too many plushies without me.”

Marissa laughed and glanced at Ariel. “See you around, Ariel.” She gave a cheerful wave and headed out into the winter sunshine, the bell above the door jingling in her wake.

Lila lingered, staring after Marissa with a dreamy little smile until she noticed Ariel watching her with a sly, knowing grin.

Lila’s blush deepened. “What?” she asked, chuckling, tucking her hair behind her ear.

Ariel just shook her head, still grinning. “Nothing. You two are adorable, that’s all.”

Lila ducked her head, giggling, then scurried back behind the counter, her steps a little lighter.

A minute later, Holly appeared, a giant chocolate chip cookie balanced on a plate. She dropped it in front of Ariel and immediately slid into the booth, pressing up against Ariel’s side once more. Without hesitation, Holly wrapped her arms around Ariel and squeezed, planting a warm kiss on Ariel’s cheek.

“There,” Holly announced, “That’s all I need. My amazing Red at my side.”

Ariel laughed, tucking herself under Holly’s arm. “And a cookie the size of my head?”

Holly shrugged, eyes bright. “I just call ‘em like I see ‘em.”

Ariel broke off a piece of cookie and held it to Holly’s lips. “Yeah yeah…You know I can’t say no to cookies.”

Holly bit the cookie, her grin sly. “You really can’t. I think I could bribe you with baked goods for anything.”

Ariel pretended to think about it. “Almost anything. You might have to up the ante to fudge covered brownies if you want a foot rub.”

Holly pressed her nose to Ariel’s temple. “Worth it.”

Ariel looked at her, voice soft. “So, how’s your day been?”

Holly leaned her head back against the booth, sighing dramatically. “Busy. Lila’s finally getting the hang of latte art, but I had to fish a spoon out of the drain…don’t ask. Mostly I just kept thinking about you. And when you showed up, it made the whole day better.”

Ariel reached over and squeezed Holly’s thigh, smiling. “Glad I could help.”

They shared the cookie, talking softly about everything and nothing: plans for dinner, funny customers, the best (and worst) drinks they’d made, and the little happinesses that made ordinary days special.

For a little while, nothing else existed but the warmth between them, the crumbs on their fingers, and the easy comfort of love.

The afternoon drifted by in a warm haze. Ariel lingered in her booth, feeling perfectly content to just exist; sipping the last of her coffee, watching Holly and Lila move behind the counter in their little dance of orders, milk froth, and whispered jokes. The bell above the door chimed every so often, but the world outside felt very far away.

Just before two, Jordan strode in, scarf wrapped tight, cheeks flush from the cold. He headed straight behind the counter, dropping his bag and nodding a greeting to the others.

Holly’s eyes lit up; she immediately grabbed a Sharpie from beside the register and twirled it like a sword. With great, mock solemnity, she stood before Jordan and tapped him once on each shoulder with the marker. “By the power vested in me by the great Java Spirits, I dub thee Jordan, Keeper of the Counter and Leader of the Watch.”

She handed the Sharpie to Jordan as if it were a royal scepter. Lila clapped from the espresso machine, and a couple of regulars grinned at the spectacle.

Jordan played his part with world-weary resignation, taking the Sharpie and raising it to the ceiling. “My watch begins. May the grounds run strong and the milk steam swiftly.” He gave Holly a sidelong look. “God, I need a vacation.”

Ariel laughed, unable to help herself. She could tell this little ceremony had played out before, each time with its own goofy twist.

Holly caught Ariel’s eye, winking. She quickly finished wiping down the counter, untied her apron, and practically skipped over to Ariel’s booth. “Alright, Red. My shift is over! Do you want to go on an adventure?”

Ariel stretched, savoring the moment. “I don’t really have any place in mind. But it’s too nice to just go straight home.”

Holly grinned, taking Ariel’s hand and tugging her gently to her feet. “Let’s just go for a walk. If something fun pops up, we’ll follow it. Sound good?”

Ariel slipped on her scarf, feeling suddenly light and happy. “Lead the way, magical girl.”

They waved goodbye to Lila and Jordan, Jordan giving them a mock salute with his “sword”, and stepped out into the crisp afternoon. The city felt full of possibility, every corner a potential adventure, as they wandered off together, hand in hand, ready to see what the world would offer next.
