Part 4

Its body looked human… but it was tall enough to reach the hospital ceiling. Even in the darkness, the deep red of its skin—and its eyes—were clearly visible. On all fours, clinging to the wall like a spider, it crawled into the room…

I tried to run for the door, but strange, incomprehensible whispers filled my ears. I dropped to my knees, like my body had suddenly gone paralyzed.

I forced myself, straining with everything I had, and barely managed to turn my head. The girl was standing by the wall near the door, frozen in terror, trembling so hard she could barely stand.

The monster peeled itself off the wall and dropped onto the floor.

At this rate, we’re both going to die.

  I can’t let that happen.

But what the hell am I supposed to do?

  Think… think… think…

It moved closer and stopped beside me. I tried to move my body, but it was useless.

It lowered its head to look at my face. Then it started sniffing loudly… and paused.

It walked past me and stopped in front of the girl.

Why did it leave me? What is it going to do?

  The girl’s voice shook violently.

  “I-I… I…”

Her tongue felt tied in fear, and she couldn’t finish the sentence.

The monster placed one of its hands on her face and, in that twisted, horrifying voice, said:

“We have to go. Your father has been looking for you for years. He’ll die without you…”

F-Father? What the hell is it talking about?

  “N-No… I’m not going…”

Tears streamed down her face as she turned her head toward me, trying not to look at the monster’s terrifying face.

At the same time, it slowly turned its head toward me too.

Then suddenly, it stretched its mouth into a wide, grotesque grin and shouted:

“You won’t come because of that boy? I know, I know. I understand… That’s what love is, right? Then I’ll tear him apart—piece by piece—and eat his body. That way, you won’t have any reason to stay. Right?!”

  “N-No… please… don’t…”

Ignoring her completely, it started moving toward me.
