Information Sheet 10: Mega Evolution
What Is Mega Evolution:
Mega evolution is one of the rarest and most extreme transformations a Pokemon can undergo, a brief blazing state of power that pushes its body past normal biological limits by activating dormant, ancient DNA buried deep within its genetic structure. Unlike a standard evolution, nothing about this process is stable or permanent. It's comparable to forcing open an evolutional path their species closed millions of years ago. During mega evolution, the Pokemon’s physical form mutates as those suppressed genetic traits flare back to life. Strength skyrockets, abilities can mutate or evolve, and even a Pokemon’s typing may shift as its type energy reserve temporarely transforms under the pressure.
The Pokemon’s type energy doesn’t simply grow stronger, it becomes supercharged and compressed, achieving a purity and intensity far surpassing what the Pokemon would normally be capable of. Depending on the quality of the mega stone compared to the stage of the Pokemon using it, this state can boost a Pokemon’s overall combat capability by roughly three-quarters of a stage. A staggering leap in power that makes Mega Evolution one of the most dangerous techniques ever discovered.
This surge, however, comes at a cost. Mega Evolution is incredibly punishing on the user, both physically and emotionally. The transformation hurts both during it and immediately after, because when the mega evolution ends, the body is left struggling to repair the internal strain and micro-damage it inflicted upon itself. Only Pokemon with exceptional mental fortitude and strong physical bodies can handle it without suffering severe consequences.
How Mega Evolution Works:
Mega evolution is triggered through a simple but incredibly demanding process. A fully evolved Pokemon holds the correct Mega Stone for its species and injects a precise pulse of its own type energy into the stone. That small injection is enough to wake the dormant, ancient DNA encoded inside both the Pokemon and the stone. Once activated, the mega stone uses its own stored type energy to act as a catalytic core, forcing latent genetic traits to flare awake. When the build-up reaches its peak, the Pokemon snaps into its mega form, biologically altered by the temporary reactivation of its ancestral blueprint.
This state however never lasts long. Mega Evolution continues only for as long as the Pokemon's mind and body can withstand the pressure. If the strain becomes too dangerous, the body automatically collapses the form. The Pokemon can also end it voluntarily at any time. The general rule is simple, the longer a Mega Evolution lasts, the more severe the internal damage afterward. Mega Evolution is powerful, but it is not gentle. Every moment in that form is a battle against the body’s natural limits, and every second added increases the cost once the transformation fades.
Mega Stones:
Mega stones are rare fragments of hyper-condensed Dungeon Cores that emerge naturally in the weeks following the destruction of one of the most dangerous and powerful Dungeons in the world. They aren’t crafted, grown, or mined on purpose, they simply appear on their own, and no one has ever uncovered a reliable method for creating them except for destroying a Dungeon and then hoping. Each stone aligns with a specific Pokemon species in its final evolutionary stage, and more importantly, with a specific stage of growth. There are stones meant for Adults, for Elders, for Ancients, for Mythicals, and for the Legendary stage. Stones for Babies, Kids, Teenagers, or any being beyond Legendaries simply do not exist, and no one knows whether Arceus Himself holds one, though many believe He must, because shaping the world without such a source of primordial power seems impossible.

A mega stone’s purpose is straightforward. It serves as an external reservoir of extremely pure, highly compressed type energy. When activated, that stored energy forces open the dormant, ancient DNA within a Pokemon’s body, pushing them far past their natural limits and allowing the mega evolution to occur. After being used, however, a mega stone is emptied and must slowly recharge by absorbing ambient type energy from the environment. How quickly this recharge happens depends entirely on the stone’s stage as well. Stones meant for higher stages refill far faster, because their structure can stabilize and draw in denser power without fracturing. Legendary-stage mega stones follow the same rule and exist as a single tier of immense potency, though the transformation of a Greater Legendary often requires more than one stone harmonizing together, or an even more potent object.
For the user, the stone’s energy quality matters. The 'three-quarters of a stage' power increase only manifests when the Mega Stone holds purer energy than the Pokemon using it. If the Pokémon’s own reserve is already equal or superior in refinement, the benefit weakens sharply, while the painful strain and post-evolution damage remain unchanged. Fake or corrupted mega stones exist as well, some merely useless, others dangerously unstable if anyone attempts to activate them. True mega stones, especially those of the higher stages like Mythical and above, are astonishingly rare. Their value is great enough that Mythicals and at times even Legendaries have fought over them, for the kind of power contained within a single stone can shift the entire balance of power.
The History of Mega Evolution:
Mega evolution has been part of the world’s history since an age so old that most records bordered on myth. The first confirmed appearances dated back to the earliest rise of the Dark Matter, long before proper written archives existed. Back then, Pokemon didn’t understand what they were witnessing, only that in moments of absolute despair, when the Dark Matter’s influence twisted entire regions, a few Pokemon suddenly ignited with a power far beyond their normal strength. These early Mega Evolutions were rare flashes of luck and instinct, sparked by overwhelming emotion and an intense will to push back against the darkness. They were not controlled techniques, nor something communities could reproduce. Only scattered individuals ever awakened that power, and when those moments passed, the phenomenon slipped back into obscurity for generations.
When the Dark Matter reawakened roughly 150 years ago the mega evolution was a somewhat known thing but still far from common. Even then, very few Pokémon possessed mega stones, and those stones were already considered priceless relics. Still, they proved to be invaluable in the fight against the Dark Matter when many Mythicals and Legendaries, but also normal Pokemon, used the mega stones most of them had inherited to push back against the overwhelming odds. It was one of many factors that helped the world survive a crisis that should have seen it perish.
Since the victory over the Dark matter 148 years ago the worlds understanding of mega evolution, spearheaded by the Expedition Society, grew vastly. Scholars refined the understanding of stages, resonance, and the nature of the mega stones, but they couldn't find a way to create any meaningful quantities of high enough quality to be worth it. Due to that, while the knowledge about mega evolution grew, the phenomenon itself remained a rarity.
Even today, most mega stones mostly remain in the hands of guilds, explorers, city rulers, or Legendaries and Mythicals. Every existing mega stone is heavily regulated and catalogued, for loosing track of even just a single one could prove catastrophic. Keeping tracks of mega stones is one of the few things most of the world works together on, though without a doubt everyone keeps one or two powerful ones hidden up their own sleeves just in case.
