The rest of the morning and even into the mid-afternoon was spent in the workshop. Pepper had gotten to the point where he felt confident enough to wield his elemental expansion rune, but also dangerously unpredictable with how he would perform in a match. Andrea continued to softly strum along and hum until they both were restless and wanted to move on to something else.
Pepper wasn’t that hungry, but he also knew that he could easily eat by the time they figured out what they were going to do next. They both returned to his room and they freshened up and it was then when an idea popped into his head. He searched about the room until he finally found the paper flyer he had wrapped up.
“So, would you like to go checkout this bookshop in downtown?”
A playfully sarcastic expression came over Andrea’s face. “Since when did you start reading books?” She ended with a slight chuckle.
He sighed and rolled his eyes. “I haven’t, but I kinda ran into the shop owner on my way to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. They told me they were having this open mic night event, and it just seemed like something to do. We could also swing by the same restaurant and you could meet Pete.”
She smiled and titled her head while shrugging her shoulders. “Sounds good to me, as long as we’re together, that’s all I care about.” She finished my sticking her tongue out at him and crossing her eyes.
“And me also, right?” Amprage cut in.
Andrea turned her gaze towards his familiar. The metal dog gave a slight wine while doing his best to form puppy dog eyes. She leaned over and wrapped her arms around him and his metal tail happily wagged back and forth. “Of course you’re coming with us! You’re our baby waby!” She declared while using a babying voice towards him.
Amprage rotated his head and sent a side glance towards Pepper while he remained cuddled up in Andrea’s arms. “You hear that… dad! I’m you’re baby.”
“You’re my pain in my ass if anything.”
Amprage wined and Andrea looked up with a scowl. “Hey there dad, don’t be a grumpy pants. He’s our baby and if anything, all his negative traits he picked up from you.”
Pepper rolled his eyes, turned around and sighed while heading out the bedroom door. He partially jumped out of his skin as Andrea surprisingly slapped his ass while they departed the room. They both, however, came to a screeching halt as Marcus and a woman Pepper had not seen before almost collided with them in the hallway. Both couples adjusting and shifting to one side to let each other through while partially introducing each other.
Marcus and his newly acquired friend closed the door to his bedroom while he and Andrea made it outside. He ordered up Buzz Podz and Andrea quietly asked. “So is that the one you’ve had issues with?”
“Yeah.”
“And… that’s his girlfriend?”
“Who knows. I’ve never seen her before, but that could easily be the thirty or fortieth girl I’ve been introduced to.”
Andrea’s mouth dropped open and her eyes widened. “What?”
“I told you.”
“You never said thirty or forty!”
“What difference does it make?”
She reared her head back slightly. “Well… I mean. I guess it doesn’t really matter, but it at least says a lot about his character. That’s for sure.” She paused for a moment, and slowly nibbled on her fingers nails while staring off to the side. “Were the others like her?”
Pepper had just tossed a stick for Amprage to fetch and titled his head back towards her. “What do you mean?”
“You know… did the others look like her?”
“Well, they were standing, you know, using two legs, breathing. They all had hair.”
“Great job Detective! You really captured all the clues and evidence to this case.”
Pepper raised his hands defensively. “You’ve never cared for the details of other peoples love life. Why in the world are you starting it now?”
Andrea snapped back in her own tone of self-defense. “I don’t know! Maybe its because we’re out of school and all I have for a social group is a disabled dad and a barn full of horses. Sometimes I need some type of spicy drama to liven things up. Besides I was just curious.”
“Can we please not make any references to spice. That chicken malalala, or whatever it is called has still got my intestines twisting all around.” Pepper had turned his attention away from Amprage who had dropped the stick at his feet and was impatiently awaiting him to throw it again. All Pepper heard was a loud thunk but immediately felt a throbbing pain on his right shin, which quickly surged up his leg. “Owww! What the heck Amp!”
“Just throw the stick already! I can’t go get it if you don’t throw it!” He declared while slightly bouncing and leaning from side to side as he waited.
Pepper gave the stick another toss and his familiar bolted after it again. The Buzz Podz soon arrived and they both started to walk over towards it. Amprage took notice of the vehicle and sprinted as quickly as he could towards it. Pepper caught sight of him out of the corner of his eye and started to yell out.
“Slow down Amp the grass is…” His familiar slipped on the grass when he tried to slam on the breaks at the last second and slammed directly into the front quarter panel of the vehicle. “wet.” Pepper finally finished after the giant crunch sound faded.
A yellow light began to flash inside the vehicle cabin and a robotic voice started to play. “Warning, a crash has been detected. Have you sustained any injuries?”
“No!” Pepper yelled out in frustration.
Amprage shook his body and then froze for a second. Pepper was sure he had just conducted a scan of himself to see if there was any damage. A half second later, the slight tilt in Amp’s head informed Pepper that he had returned to his usual self. “Actually, it appears that my right shoulder may have suffered a slight indentation.”
The robotic voice picked up on the familiars statement. “I am sorry to hear of your injury. Please stand by as I will contact emergency services.”
“No, no, no! We’re fine. We don’t need medical attention, or any attention for that matter.” Pepper countered.
There was a small computer like audible noise and Pepper was sure the system was connecting him to a representative. He waited for a moment and then heard what sounded like a human voice on the other end of the line. “Hello, my name is Sherri and I will be assisting you today. As I understand it, you were involved in an accident with your rented Buzz Podz?”
Pepper balled his hands into fists and glared down at Amprage. His familiar had taken up a defensive position behind Andrea, who merely sighed in empathy towards both party members. “Well, we didn’t have a car accident, but my familiar did run into the front passenger side of the car and there is a small dent.”
“Oh, I see. Well, I’m sorry to hear that but accidents do happen and just to clarify, nobody is actually hurt?”
“No…” Pepper replied.
He could just make out a small whisper of Amprage from behind Andrea. “Emotionally damaged, seeing how my dad doesn’t love me. It was just an accident.”
Andrea turned around and started to comfort his familiar by snuggling him tight. Pepper looked up towards the heavens and rolled his eyes. Oh please! You have to be kidding me. I so don’t want children if this is what I have to put up with. He finally lowered his head and returned back to the operator. “No one is hurt.”
“Okay, great. Well thank you for answering that question. This process is fairly simple, just send me a photo of the damage and we’ll be able to send you a bill for the repair work,”
“Okay I will…” He paused, and thought about it a second before returning to the conversation with a counter. “Wait, how do you not know that this accident was your vehicles fault? What if I told you that your vehicle actually ran into my dog?”
“Oh, well I am terribly sorry about that. Do you have video evidence that you can send us? I’ll need that in order to divert the claim to our financials department.”
Pepper felt his jaw clench and his knuckles tightened slightly. “No, I don’t have any video evidence.”
“Well, I am sorry to say that we have no problem going through the claim process and even mitigation, but we will need some type of video evidence which proves our vehicle was the initiator of the accident and damage.”
“I see…” He then titled his head and countered again. “What happens if I choose not to pay it.”
“Well, I would not advice that, and granted… I am not a legal representative and you should consult with a lawyer before making any decisions. Seeing how things may or may not negatively affect you, or your situation. However, should you decided to not pay the invoice and want to continue to negotiate this event, we’ll block you, your family, and everyone else living at this location from using our services.”
Pepper sighed and thought about how much he and even Wilson would need the service if things between Marcus got any worse and he refused to give them rides to places. He did think about the option of asking Elowen for a ride somewhere. But knowing him and how spontaneous he could be at times, that option was one he could truly rely on.
He was about to concede when Andrea grew impatient and answered for him. “He’ll pay the bill, just go ahead and send it to him. Now can we use this pod thing and be on our way?”
“Hold on a second…” Their was a faint sound of tapping but a few seconds later the woman’s voice returned. “Looks like our system has finished its scan and analysis and is reporting that the vehicle is still operational and safe to utilize. It appears that the damage is just some minor cosmetic work that will need to be done. Please remember to wear your seatbelts and have a nice day.”
“Thanks.” Andrea said with a smile and then turned to face him and Amprage. “Come on boys, lets load up.”
Amprage jumped into the vehicle, but thankfully the rest of the ride into downtown was uneventful. The vehicle came to a soft stop and they climbed out. Pepper’s attention was focused across the street. The bank that had been robbed weeks back was still being repaired. The construction golems that the contractor was utilizing were so ridged and robotic in their movement that it chaffed him internally. It was not a surprise to him that the project was taking so long. The golems moved at such a slow pace that Pepper couldn’t help himself and started to walk across the street.
Andrea didn’t even realize he was on the move until she turned around and saw him halfway across the street. She lifted her arms up, questioning what he was doing. “Where are you going?”
“Just… give me a minute.” He called back over his shoulder.
He picked his feet up into a slight jog and the contractor caught the movement and turned to greet him when he arrived. “Can I help you?”
“Hey there. I’m Pepper.” He outstretched his hand and the large man clasped onto it with a firm grip.
The man arched an eyebrow but finished the greeted. “Larry Hilltower.” Pepper couldn’t help but internally chuckle at the fact that the man’s last name matched his stature. Larry was an easy foot taller than Pepper, with shoulders so wide that he was three times the width of him as well. Larry reached up and shifted his construction hat on his head and then wiped his head with his flannel shirt. “What can I do for you Pepper?”
Pepper turned slight and pointed back to where they had been dropped off at. He took notice of the fact that Amprage and Andrea were slowly walking over and arrived a few seconds later. “Well, we got dropped off across the street, and I couldn’t help but notice…” He paused and felt his nerves surge to life, slightly afraid of how to bring up his concerns.
“Well… what did you notice son?” Larry asked with an uptick of annoyance.
“It’s… well it’s your golems.”
“Okay, what about them?”
Pepper tilted his head and pressed his lips together. “They’re… well… they’re moving so slow.” He finally blurted out. “It’s almost painful to watch.” He finished and then saw the manufacturer logo printed on the shoulder of one of the golems walking by. “I see you’re golem’s are from Gleegon Industry. My assumption is that they are HD 40’s. I would be happy to take a look at them and see why they are moving so slow, perhaps get them recalibrated to perform at the level they’re supposed to.” D2000s
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Larry quickly formed a grin on his face. “Oh, so you have experience with the HD 40’s do you?”
“Well, not directly. But my dad works at a grocery store where they use the SD2000’s. Their internal configuration is similar and I have the tools at my place to run diagnostics on them.”
Larry tilted his head and nodded. “Well thanks Pepper, that’s kind of you to offer, but, that won’t be necessary. These golems are operating exactly the way they are programmed to.” Pepper’s mouth dropped open in shock and the man let out a low laugh. “Yeah, what you fail to realize is that it’s not the golems that is the problem, but government regulation.”
Pepper pressed his lips together and it all immediately made sense. “Figures.” He muttered while propping his hands on his hips.
“Yup. We’d easily have had this entire project down in half the time if it wasn’t for the government making us utilize these golems at a quarter of their ability. The safety regulations the government puts on us is practically crippling.” Larry shrugged and sighed, “Hell, I wish I had the ability to have a full human crew. Unfortunately, this is what I have to work with.”
“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.” Andrea said as she wrapped her arms around Pepper from behind, and then lowered her chin to rest on his shoulder.
Larry crossed his arms and nodded back. “Exactly.”
A slender man appeared from across the worksite. “Hey boss! I need you to come check this out, looks like the plumber cut another corner.”
“Son of a….” The man caught himself and then extended his hand out. Pepper latched on and the two nodded. “Thanks for the offer kid, much appreciated. You take care of yourself and stay safe out there.”
“Will do, and same to you.” Pepper watched the man walk off. He was then surprised as he felt Andrea jump up and wrap her legs around his waist. He chuckled and started to give her a piggy back ride back across the street.
“Come on Pepper Golem 1, get a move on!” Andrea exclaimed while jabbing her finger into his chest.
“Oh, is that all I am to you?”
“Of course not babe! You’re my meal ticket to the Golem League, I’m gonna ride you like a bus and enjoy it when you buy momma a sports car!”
He rolled his eyes and shook his head. “What kind of sports car are you expecting exactly?”
He could feel the slight shrug of her shoulders. “I don’t know. As long as it goes fast.”
“Figures.”
They finally arrived at the alleyway which led to the bookshop door. Andrea hopped down as they stood under the neon-colored sign that was lit up in green, and yellow colors. The door creaked with life when they opened it up and stepped inside. The distinct smell of books greeted them and they paused and took in another long deep breath.
“Oh, there is nothing like the smell of books.” Andrea said with a smile while she squeezed his arm.
Pepper scanned over the room and saw some men setting up the stage on the far end of the shop. A few scattered wooden chairs were spread around and faced the small platform. They had adjusted the lighting in the shop to be darker and set the mood for the special event. There were a few customers scattered about the few isles, but Pepper couldn’t help but assume that the turnout was not to the level they had hoped to achieve for the event.
The two gentlemen finished their work on the stage and he then recognized the taller of the two as the man he had originally met in the alleyway. His memory had to take a second until he remembered it was Aaron. Pepper couldn’t help but internally laugh when he noticed the yellow button up shirt that Aaron was wearing was adorned with pineapples, bananas, and then an assortment of dinosaurs. It wasn’t just the fact that the dino’s were printed on the shirt, but also the fact that the dino’s were holding an assortment of automatic weapons, explosives, and flamethrowers.
His eyes followed the other man who quickly appeared from around the corner of a book aisle. The man was adjusting his navy blue polo but when he looked up their eyes locked. To Pepper’s surprise the man recognized him and smiled. “Hey you made it. Remind me of your name again?”
“Pepper”
The man snapped his finger and then gave him a pat on the shoulder while he slowly kept walking by. “That’s right. Hey, I’ll be right back.” The man then adjusted to call out across the store. “Ryan, we have some customers.” But soon disappeared out of sight.
“Be right there!” Came a playful voice filled with energy.
Pepper looked at Andrea and he couldn’t help but smile seeing Andrea so happy. The trip and time together was exactly what they both needed and he didn’t want the moment to end. The dim lit setting of the bookshop made the moment more intimate, but there was a sparkle in Andrea’s brown eyes.
Pepper could sense movement off his left side, and he turned to see the person he assumed was Ryan arrive. A stack of books in his hands that he quickly placed down at the front register. He straightened his patterned high neck sweeter and quickly reached up and adjusted his brown hair. His brown eyes widened and a giant smile beamed behind his beard and mustache while he approached.
“Hey guys, thanks for coming in, we’re glad to have you.”
“Yeah, thanks.”
“So what brings you in today?”
Pepper looked at Andrea for a split second but then turned his attention back. “I walked back a couple of weeks back and Aaron and the other guy-“
Ryan nodded, “Nathan. It had to have been Nathan.”
Pepper pointed back to Ryan. “Yup… that’s right. They told me about an open mic night. I figured it was something for us to do.”
“Well that’s so great. I’m so happy that you guys decided to come hangout. I must say, this place…” Ryan made a sarcastic face which Pepper read as one of him portraying death. “Let’s just be honest and real. It was a drag… like nails grinding down a chalkboard had more energy than this place. Needless to say, Aaron and Nathan gave me creative control to make some adjustments and, not to toot my own horn, but… yeah, it’s a million times better.”
Pepper chuckled at the man’s flamboyance. There was an aura which seemed to surround him, an energetic personality that was rare to find these days. He looked over and saw Andrea had a smile from ear to ear and he instinctively knew that she had just found her new best friend.
“Well it looks really good so far.” She said.
Ryan lifted his hand up and gently placed it on his chest. “Thank you. Yeah, I’ve put a lot of work into this place in the short time I have been here. I came close to even breaking a sweat, but thank god I didn’t, because, eww.” He shuttered for a moment but then asked. “I’m Ryan, and you are?”
“Andrea, this is my boyfriend Pepper.”
“Love it…” Ryan said with a wave of his hand and a fresh new smile. “Well, I’m glad you guys came in for the mic night, but are you also wanting to check out some books?”
Pepper was about to decline, but was surprised when Andrea cut him off and continued. “Actually… I have been thinking about getting back into reading. This woman I work with, Eli Gardner. She has been reading some books and talking to me all about them. I have to say, I have this itch to get back into it. Also, my dad’s birthday is coming up, so I could always pick up something for him.”
“Yes. Just… yes to all of that.” Ryan said. He slowly walked over and leaned closer to Andrea. “Okay, so let’s start with you. What do you like?”
Andrea giggled. “Well, I don’t know really. What options are available?”
A slight sigh came out of Ryan and he started to sarcastically count the options on his fingers. “Well, we have Book Daddies, Monster Mommies… but, I don’t think you’d really be into those. There are Monster Daddies, but they aren’t as fun as Book Daddies. We then have Criminal Baddies, Slice of Nice, Academies, Flyboys, Isekai’s, VRMMO’s.” Ryan paused and motioned with his head towards Pepper. “That seems like it would be more of his thing.”
Andrea was now laughing. “Wait… so there is book daddies and monster daddies? I’ve never even heard of these book categories.”
“Oh honey… trust me, it doesn’t make sense, until it makes sense.” A playful pause between the two while a bit of suspense built. Ryan finally reached out and wrapped his arm around Andrea’s. “You know what. Don’t worry, Ryan’s got you.” Ryan quickly dashed glances between them, his free hand motioning all around with dramatic effect. “You may be his outside this bookshop. But inside this bookshop…. You’re mine!”
Pepper had found a small high table and chairs off to the side of the room and he sat down. Before he knew it, Andrea came walking over with a tote bag full of books. He couldn’t help but shake his head and chuckle.
“We’re gonna have to swing by a store and buy an extra piece of luggage.”
“You know you don’t have to buy half the bookstore in one visit right? It’s not like the books are going-“ She raised finger in her direction and a scowl on her face which warned him he could be stabbed at any moment. “You know what, forget it. What I said wasn’t important.”
“That’s more like it.”
The room has slowly filled and Pepper guessed there was about 20 people who had gathered around. Aaron walked up to the stage and tapped the small microphone they had set up at the front. His finger tapped down and the soft thud rang out from the two speakers they had placed off to each side of the small platform.
“Well, hey, yeah, okay now. We’re ready to kick this thing off.” Aaron appeared slightly jittery, as if he couldn’t sit still. Pepper couldn’t tell if it was nerves, an overabundance of energy and excitement, or just Aaron’s personality being overemphasized for the event. “Okay, well thank you everyone for showing up! It’s great to see some of our regular customers…Sharon, Margie, Bob…” Aaron pointed and waved at each customer he mentioned. He then turned and gave a nod to a few others in the room and ended gazing over to Pepper and Andrea. “And some of our new customers. Thanks so much for being here.”
Aaron paused and cleared his throat. “You know. Bookstores were a dying industry, and were for so many years. Some of you in the room were not even born, or were in the early years of life when our world… or way of existence changed. Back then we read books on digital devices and watched a bunch of TV. Well, when a horde of demons rips right through data centers and erases the vast majority of those digital books, we quickly realized how valuable these old, printed books immediately became.”
There was a pause and Aaron appeared to be fighting back a wave of emotion that had risen up within him. He turned around and found a small barstool, moving it closer to the microphone stand. Aaron removed the microphone and held it in his hand and finally took a seat.
“For Nathan and I… this book store, well, it means a lot to us. We kinda see it as a beacon in the night, you know?” Pepper took notice of a slight movement. He quickly glanced over to see some of the older clients were nodding along in agreement with Aaron’s statement. He quickly turned his attention back to the shop owner. “When our lives are covered in darkness, when everything seems lost and without hope… well, some of these stories, written across time and preserved on the paper they’re printed on. It helps gives us hope. Let’s us escape our situation for a short period of time and imagine what if.
“But… many days I feel as if it’s a loosing battle. Were starting to see life climb back to where it was before the Wars. Back to where we’re glued to digital devices that just suck us in and keep us latched on like an alien life form.” Aaron had brought his hand up, formed like a claw that simulated being latched onto his face. The gesture caused a low rumble of laughter to fill the room. “So, thank you for being here today and giving Nathan and I hope. The encouragement that our beacon of light hasn’t been snuffed out from the darkness of the light, or washed out by the distraction of digital devices. Thank you for spending this night with us.”
There was a pause in the room and Pepper could feel it fill with warmth of love, support, and appreciation from everyone there. It was a second later that he felt Andrea’s hand landed on his forearm. He turned to see her watery eyes filled with emotion but a small grin on her face.
“Okay, so to celebrate this special event, I’ve written a song. Now granted, I’m still learning guitar and this whole, you know, music thing. But hey! We gotta kick this thing off with a bang, right? So here we go.” Aaron put the microphone back on the stand.
He turned around and retrieved a guitar that was placed in the back corner of the small stage. Aaron quickly brought it up and wrapped the strap across his back. His fingers accidentally nicked the strings and the guitar reverberated out.
“Oops.” Aaron said while rolling his shoulders and adjusting himself into a comfortable stance. “Okay… so this song is about a dungeon that Nathan and I actually wrote about.” Aaron cleared his throat and then began.
Going to a dungeon
Gonna do some good
Going to a dungeon.
Going to Fidotopia
Gonna save the dogs
Going to Fidotopia
World has a dungeon
Keeping it alive
World has a dungeon
Otis is the dungeon
Keeps the world alive
Otis is the dungeon
And I…
As your accountant
Dungeon Accountant
Can Save you!
At first Pepper’s eyebrow shot up in judgement. Curious, but worried that perhaps Aaron had just gotten out to a rough start and it would get better. But… it didn’t. Eventually his eyes grew wide and the level of cringe crawling up his spine was so strong that he balled his hands into fists. Though Pepper didn’t have any musical talent, he was pretty sure there wasn’t a single note Aaron sang that was accurately sung. Oh gawd please… I want to support this bookshop, but I also want to jam my head into a microwave and let radiation take its course! He mentally screamed.
Thankfully Nathan jumped into action and finally stepped up onto the stage. He placed his hand on Aaron’s shoulder while quickly grabbed the microphone and tilted it away from Aaron. Nathan smiled at Aaron who had a slightly puzzled look on his face, but a slight nod Nathan seemed to set in the advice he was trying to convey.
Nathan leaned in to the microphone. “Thanks Aaron. Hey, let’s give it up for the shop owner. It sure aint easy getting up in front of people like that and pouring your heart out. Right?”
The room filled with clapping and one or two whistles. Pepper loudly clapped out of happiness for it all to be over with. He then felt his shit surge with pain as Andrea kicked him from under the table.
“Okay everyone, well this is an open mic night. If there is anything you want to share with us, we’d be happy to hear it.” Nathan said with a smile.
Pepper turned and looked at Andrea. A worried look on her face immediately greeted him as he smiled and motioned with his head towards the stage. “Get up there.”
Her eyes were about to burst out of her head and her jaw clenched tight. She shook her head and crossed her arms.
“What? Come on babe. You got this.”
She finally leaned forward and muttered out with anger. “I’m not ready for people to hear me, I don’t even have a finished song.”
“You’re never going to be ready for people to hear you, if you keep holding on to that negative attitude.” Pepper looked back over the room real quick and then turned back empathetically. “Besides, there is only like 20 people here, and I’m pretty sure 15 of them have never even made an account on Golem Chat. Think of it as a test. Dipping your toe into the water before you take the plunge.”
Andrea sat back upright but was still tightly latched down to not participating. There was an awkward silence over the crowd and Pepper read it as everyone being uncomfortable with the vulnerability required to share. He then stood up without warning and yelled out. “Andrea is going to sing us a song, let’s give it up for her, woo!” He started clapping and the cue that ignited the rest of the room into applause.
Andrea did her best to resist, but her delaying didn’t suffice and she finally surrendered to the pressure. “You’re in such hot water!” She whispered while passing by him. She made her way up to the stage and grabbed hold of the microphone.
The room slowly quieted down, but she swayed back and forth. A look of anxiety on what she would share and she nibbled away on her thumb nail for a few seconds. She finally shook her head and cleared her throat while leaning into the microphone.
“Okay… so, this is a newer song that I have been working on. And… well, it’s not complete. So, be gentle on me.”
Andrea leaned back and took a few deep breathes. She wrapped both hands around the microphone and finally started to softly sing.
“There’s a light, that has finally pierced the dark.
My fist clenched tight while I watch the spark.
And now my soul has found hope once again.
The wick of my candle has been relit…
My spirit has been re-awakened to it.
And so I rise, though I’m still veiled in shadows wake,
But I won’t let it direct my fate.
Today’s the day, I will proclaim-
That the dawn has arrived and now’s the time to make our stand.
So now I stand.
I reach out and take daylights hand.
A united front standing against the damned…
Just wait and see, victory, is only a breath away…”
