Chapter 8:Death of a royal
As Roberto made the drive to his condo he wonder was this it, was this going to be the moment he finds out who the person was that gave him the spiked blood. He didn’t want to believe it was Carl, but he couldn’t rule anything out.
There were 5 royal families, one ran the Southside, one the Northside, one the Westside, one the Eastside, and then there was the head royal family, Roberto’s family, that oversaw it all and had final say in how things will be done in the Toledo branch. Carl’s family ran the Eastside, he and Lamar grew up together, they have been best friend for hundreds of years. So when Roberto thought that Carl could have anything to do with it, it made him sick to his stomach. But he also knew Carl and Carl had a shifty side, if he knew he stood to gain something it didn’t matter to him who he hurt in the process to get what he wants, that’s the reason why Lamar never mentioned anything about Crystal to him. He pulled into his private garage, he didn’t want Carl to know he was there just yet.
He entered his condo and used his vampire speed to check to make sure there was nothing sitting out that will give any idea about his other life, and made it look a little bit more lived in, since he haven’t stayed there in a few months. He called down to the door man and instructed him to let Carl up, he then checked to make sure his gun was loaded and ready to fire if needed. He put the gun behind his back and covered it with his shirt.
The doorbell rang, Roberto paused for a second, he took a deep breath and went to answer the door.
“He man, what’s up?” Roberto said opening the door.
“Nothing much, just wanted to come and talk to you for a bit,” Carl said as he entered the condo.
“Cool. Let’s go over to the living room,” Carl followed as Roberto led the way. Roberto condo was decorated in an industrial fashion, lots of leather and metal furniture. It was very bachelor pad. Carl sat down on one of the uncomfortable couches as Roberto went over to his bar to grab two glasses.
“So what did you want to talk about?” Roberto asked as he picked up two crystal whiskey glasses with a checkered design.
“How’s Crystal?” Carl asked grinning like the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland.
“What did you say?” Roberto shattered the two glasses in his hand.
“Crystal, you know your pregnant girlfriend, I guess technically mistress, seeing how you were, I mean are going to marry my sister right.”
Roberto and Carl’s sister were set up in an arrange marriage, it was a way to keep the royal bloodline pure. Roberto was at first for it, until he met Crystal and instantly fell in love.
‘What do you know?” Roberto clenched his bloody fist.
“Whoa there big guy,” Carl put his hands up. “Now I come in peace man.” Carl said.
“Just sit down, take a load off. We are friends here right?” Roberto rolled his eyes at the comment, but did as he was instructed. “Now what are we going to do about this little problem of ours?”
“The only problem we are going to have is me ripping your heart out if you don’t tell me what the hell this is all about.”
“Tsk tsk tsk, such aggression. Right now your house is surrounded by a punch of my unpure, just ready to make an old sire proud. You know I bet they never had pregnant woman before, it’s such an eccentric taste, you know because of all the hormones and what not being produced.” Carl pulled a cigar out of his jacket pocket and lit it. Carl then got up to grab two more glasses from the bar that was behind him. As he had his back turned Roberto took out his phone and used his vampire speed to send two texts one to Crystal and surprisingly to him one to Lamar. Carl poured two glasses of the blood he brought, he set one glass in front of Roberto. He raised the glass up in the air “cheers,” he took a sip and sat back down on the couch right across from Roberto.
“What do you want, why go after Crystal she has nothing to do with this, you’re making a mistake.” Roberto said pushing the glass of blood away from him, he was now convinced that the tainted blood came from Carl.
“Is that how you treat a longtime friend, some may even say best friend, I bring you this nice bottle of virgin O negative, and you treat me like some kind of stranger trying to serve you cat piss or something.” Carl swirled the blood in his glass, he was trying to get under Roberto’s skin and it was working, but Roberto knew if he tried anything right now that it might end bad for Crystal and his unborn child. He had to keep whatever this was going to give the guys enough time to save her.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN NEAR THE SUBURBS
“We got to go, grab your guns.” Lamar said grabbing his bag off his coffee table.
“Where are we going?” Sean asked
“I’ll explain on the way, just come on.”
Lamar ran out his front door with Sean right behind him, they hopped into Lamar’s truck and he took off down the road.
“Where are we going? Sean asked again.
“Okay you’re in the car now, so you can’t say no. But Roberto just texted me this message about his fiancé in trouble and if we can help her,” Lamar paused and looked at Sean out the corner of his eye. He was waiting for him to freak out, but he never did he just sat there in silence.
“So you’re not mad?” Lamar chuckled.
“Oh I’m actually pretty pissed at you right now and I’m going to kick your ass later, but I can’t let some lady and her baby die. What kind of Duskers would we be if we did that, what is going on anyways?”
“The text was pretty short but there are some unpures surrounding his house and that she is inside. He sent me the address and just asked if we can help.” Lamar sped up, it was only a matter of time before the unpures get sick of waiting and just attack, they were not known for their patient demeanor.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
“How far away are we?” Sean asked.
“It looks like about five minutes.” Lamar answered.
“So what’s the plan then?”
“I figured we just take them out.” Lamar responded like it was an obvious answer.
“You may be all powerful but a tactician you are not. If we go in guns a blazing we might miss one and they make it to his fiancé, or someone might see us, you know everyone has a camera phone now. We have to play this smart.” They were about to turn onto Roberto’s block when Sean stopped him. “Park around the corner so we wont be seen. Will cut up through this ally and take out the ones in the back of the house quietly, it’ll be less of them back there.”
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why would it be less of them back there?”
“Because most people go for the quickest and easiest exit, and that is normally the front door, so they are going to post most of them up front.” Sean said.
“But you are assuming that this vampires are going to be thinking like that, and not like strung out junkies looking for a fix.”
“True but we have to assume these unpures were sired by a pure blood, and not other unpures since you said the house was surrounded. Do you think a bunch of sired unpures from unpures would even wait and not already have ripped her apart?”
“True, and sired unpures from unpures is a mouthful, we need to figure out a better name for them.” Lamar said as he parked the car and the two of them got out. There was an alley way right behind a row of houses that led to Roberto’s backyard. They quickly made their way down the alley, were they found a shed in the back of the house that they could hide behind. Lamar took out his guns, he had put on some silencers on them why they were in the car so he wouldn’t make any noise.
“Hold up.” Lamar bent down and placed a hand on the ground, he closed his eyes and concentrated, he sent out his magic like ripples in water towards the house, not able to be seen by anyone but him unless he wanted them to. He felt two pulses, then one as it went through the house and then four more as it went out into the street.
“What are you doing?” Sean whispered.
“There is two in the back, just her in the house and about 4 in the front, but the further I send out my magic like that the weaker it gets so there is a chance I might of missed one or two.” Lamar was able to use is magic like bat sonar and pick up on others aura. It’s still a new ability, he hasn’t mastered it yet.
“Send out your magic, when did you learn how to do that?”
“About a month ago, we were looking for this missing child at the hospital and I just kind of figured out I could do it.”
“Yeah but how?”
“Bro we can talk about this later, we are in the middle of a rescue.”
“Right, I got this,” Sean cocked his pistols. He crept around the shed, and made his way to the backyard, he moved fast and quiet. There were two vampires standing there with their back to him. He raised his guns and fired, two direct hits to their hearts, the vampires dropped to the ground with their bodies turning to ash, all that remained were their clothes.
“Remind me to go through their pockets later.” Sean stated to Lamar as he entered the backyard. Duskers aren’t paid for what they do, you have some that charge certain business for their services, but most of the time they have a regular 9 to 5. The back door was locked, Lamar waved his hand in front of the lock and they could hear a click, the door was now unlocked. They crept into what appeared to be a laundry room that led to a den just passed the den was the living room. They made their way through the dark house. This wasn’t a problem for duskers, they can see in the dark, like they were wearing night vision goggles. They found the stairs that lead to the second floor, they slowly ascended with Sean in the front with his guns at the ready.
“The text said it should be the first door on the right.”
They found the door and walked over, Sean reached for the handle when Lamar suddenly stopped him, he moved in front and knocked three times, then open the door. Standing there with a pump action shotgun was a very pregnant Crystal. Lamar threw up his hands creating a force field.
“Wait! We are here to help!” Lamar shouted. They both gave him a dirty look. Vampire’s senses are greater than humans and Lamar yelling was sure heard by one of them. Seconds later the front door exploded off its hinges.
“Oh great, barricade the door and I’ll be right back.” Sean said cocking his guns. They can hear footsteps rushing through the house heading towards them.
“I have a better idea.” Lamar fumbled around in his bag and pulled out what appeared to be two flash bangs, he pulled the pins and signaled Sean to open the door, he tossed them out, one landing in the hall and the other banking off a wall and down some stairs. Sean slammed the door shut. There were two loud bangs followed by screams and howls. You can hear things crash to the floor and breaking as the vampires tried to get out of the house crashing into walls and furniture.
Lamar grabbed some gas masks and goggles out of his bag and handed a pair to them, “Put these on.” They did as they were told, Lamar also put on a gas mask and goggles. He gave Sean another nod and Sean opened the door, the bedroom immediately was flooded with a slightly yellowish mist. The goggles and masks were enchanted, so they were able to see through the mist and breathe normally.
They slowly made their way to the stairs, as they went down the stairs, there were two sets of clothes on the step, one male and one female it looked like, the downstairs looked like a tornado came through, there were broken knick-knacks and furniture everywhere. They made it out the back door. Crystal and Sean took off the goggles and masks and handed them back to Lamar who put them back in his bag.
“What was that?” Sean asked
“My version of vampire mace, some holy water, silver nitrite, and actual mace. All compressed into a flash bang.” Lamar said with a smile, he was really proud of his invention. It took him years to get the dispersal right. He even had one for werewolves that was a mixture of silver nitrite and wolves’ bane but in a concussive sound grenade.
“Nice, you have to let me get a few of those.” Crystal said.
“You hunt?” Sean asked as they started making their way down the alley back to the car.
“No, but after tonight’s events I’m more than positive I’m going to need some.”
“Yeah I only seen two sets of clothes on the steps, which means the other two got away.” Sean reminded them.
“Yeah but we should be fine there is no way they are recovering from that anytime soon.” Lamar said.
Back at the condo.
Roberto’s phone vibrated across the table. He went to reach for it but before he could Carl grabbed his phone.
“Huh, so she is safe. Well that’s a kick in the balls.” He tossed Roberto his phone. As Roberto went to grab it he felt a piercing pain in the middle of his chest. Carl was on top of him with a silver dagger in his hand purposely missing Roberto’s heart. Roberto screamed in pain, blood splattering out of his mouth.
“What the hell!” He chocked out. As Carl stood up off of him.
Carl grabbed a handkerchief out of his breast pocket and wiped the blood off of his face. He didn’t attend to kill Roberto. He purposely missed the heart.
“So your little dusker buddies helped you out I see, welp I guess they are going to have to die as well. You know I just had a thought, your little fiancé is still alive being this far along in her pregnancy, a normal human would of died within a few weeks, the blood consumption alone from the fetus would have killed her. I know she isn’t a vampire. So that begs the question, what is she?”
“Go to hell.” Roberto choked out. He tried removing the dagger from his chest but it was burning hot to the touch.
“Enchanted dagger buddy, you can pull it out, but it’s not going be a fun time.” Carl grabbed the bottle of blood off the table and started walking to the door, “I think I’ll personally take care of your fiancé. Give her some special attention.” Carl reached for the door handle when he heard a loud bang, he stopped, he turned towards Roberto who was now standing hold the dagger that was once in his chest, you can hear his hand sizzling, he dropped the dagger on the ground.
“I can’t let you leave.” Aiming the gun that was once hidden. Carl went to speak as his body turned to ash. Roberto collapsed to the ground and passed out.
