Ninety Two

Seulgi parked in the guest parking and they approached the hospital. Once inside, they we to the floor where Wendy’s room was supposed to be. Once exiting the elevator, they found the charge desk. There was about a three-meter of brilliant green philodendrum on the desk. They asked to confirm where Wendy’s room was and if she had been moved there from the ER yet. It turned out that she had been moved there an hour ago.

They thanked the nurse for the information and went to the room. A pale, washed out Wendy was there, still asleep. The already tiny woman seemed smaller somehow. The rge bed did not help that impression. The IV in her arm, heart monitor, and other medical equipment gave testament that while she was alive and going to get better, it was a very near thing. Even novices such as Seulgi and Katie could see that it was not a good thing, those beeps and breathes monitor.

Katie’s sharply indrawn breath reminded Seulgi that she needed to be strong for the younger woman. She pced her hand on Katie’s shoulder and pushed her through the doorway.

She blessed the currently embattled Nayeon for her efficacy because the flowers that were ordered were already there. The brilliant colors of the bouquet sharply contrasted with the paleness of the figure in the bed. Wendy was already pale, but now she was more noticeably washed out. The only color she had was from the wires attached to her. She looked like something out of Mrs Tussaud's Wax Museum.

With the curtains open, the golden sunlight gave her a near halo but did add a bit of color. The soft sound of her breathing also emphasized how unnatural the scene was. There should have been a smile and heavy breathing from working out or belting out a song, but there was only the soft shush of the oxygen being delivered.

It was Katie’s turn to put a comforting hand on the taller woman’s shoulder. Seulgi was trembling. She had also lost all of the color in her face from shock.

They both took comfort from each other.

They both grabbed a chair and set it next to the bed. Seulgi started talking to the unconscious woman. She told her what was happening. That she was safe. That her parents were on the way. They would be nding at the airport in a few hours. Then she started talking about what was going on with the group of people who knew them. Then started talking about work.

There was a tap on her arm, and Katie handed her a cup of ice water. Seulgi had been so wrapped up in talking to Wendy that she didn’t even notice the young woman get up and leave.

Seulgi nodded in gratitude and kept talking.

After a bit more, Seulgi wound down and Katie took up the task of talking.

They took turns talking to her. They also took turns refilling the water. They continued this for a while.

Seulgi’s phone beeped. She looked at the notice.

“Katie, I have to go. Her parents are nding in an hour. We’ll be back. Will you be okay?”

Katie just nodded, looking determined. There also was a look that said that if anyone had harbored any ill intents, she’d be willing to break them into their component particles. The fierceness in her eye said that she was perfectly willing to do it, too. The anger in her eyes would be enough to give even Tae pause.

Seulgi gave Wendy a kiss on the forehead. Then she hugged Katie and left for the airport. Being that Seulgi was not given to showing affection quite so obviously, Katie was first taken aback and then fttered. She also began to understand why her circle of friends loved her so dearly.

Seulgi made it to her car with only one mishap. The sliding door that was supposed to slide didn’t. She bumped her nose with an awkward squeak. Then it when did open, Seulgi gred at the door as she left the building.

She got to her car with no further issues.

While climbing into the car, she got a text with a simple ‘Done.’ from Nayeon.

“Tnks” was texted back. Normally, she would text proper, full words, finding text-speak annoying. However, she was in a hurry and she knew that Nayeon would understand.

She started the car. Made sure there were no error lights on the dash. Full tank of gas. Everything looked good to go. She reversed out of the parking space and pced the car in drive. She drove.

She was a cautious person by nature. If she was a km or two over, that was fine, but she’d start worrying at 5km over the speed limit. She didn’t want a ticket, after all. Besides, being a cautious person, she was worried about what would happen if she got into an accident because she lost control of the car. She had worried herself into a nervous wreck more than once.

But, this time, everything went smoothly. Everything in the car was fine – even the cherry-scented air freshener on the vent was giving a pleasant scent.

Evidently, the Traffic Gods were happy with her as she was able to go smoothly without many traffic lights stopping her. She was able to get there in record time. Not that she needed to as she left early, expecting to be te due to every possible thing going wrong. As if frequently did. But not today. However, there was always the trip back. But, she figured if things went slow or were deyed, that would give her more time to talk to Wendy’s parents.

As she approached the airport’s arrivals parking lot, she got her parking ticket from the automatic machine and stuck it in her sunscreen. She found a parking spot retively close to the entrance by the B5 column. She got out of the car, locking it. She then gave herself a once over, making sure that she was presentable. She was. She was gorgeous but didn’t take that into consideration. She was more worried about rips, stains, or crumbs. She passed inspection. Straightening her shirt, she marched towards the arrival terminals.

She checked her phone again. She was a bit early, so she walked more casually. Since she was still a bit early, she went to the arrivals counter and asked if she could have a piece of printer paper and a marker. Despite the odd look she got, she took the marker and put the family name in bold strokes. Smiling that famous smile that melted countless hearts, she handed the marker back to the blinded attendant and walked over to the entrance.

She went and sat down to wait. She managed to sit in a warm sunbeam and basked in the radiant heat. She didn’t know that she looked like a modern masterpiece of art, but everyone who passed by did.

Then her phone beeped. They were here. She stood up, to the disappointment of those gawking at her, and moved to the entrance and held up the sign with their name.
